Pauli Murray was a published poet.
An Episcopal Priest.
An Attorney and law professor.
A feminist.
How did one person accomplish so much?
Her story is a remarkable journey from anger to reconciliation
And, if you’ve ever heard Becky Stone, you know you won’t want to miss her!
BORN IN 1910, PAULI GREW UP IN “THE BOTTOMS” OF DURHAM, NC UNDER OPPRESSIVE JIM CROW LAWS. SHE DID EVERYTHING SHE COULD TO ESCAPE THOSE LAWS AND TO CHANGE THEM. HER AUTOBIOGRAPHY READS AS A PARADE OF THE FAMOUS AND FAMILIAR. SHE WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN FORMING THE NATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF WOMEN. SHE WAS AMONG THE FIRST WOMEN PRIESTS ORDAINED IN THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH – AT THE AGE OF 67.
  • She was arrested for challenging bus segregation in 1940, fourteen years before Rosa Parks!
  • Helped defeat Jim Crow at a D.C. restaurant 20 years before the sit-ins in Greensboro!
  • Applied to Chapel Hill grad school and Harvard Law when it was illegal for black students or women to do so.

Becky Stone is an accomplished storyteller and performer. She has told stories at school, libraries, universities all over the country. She is a member of Thrice-Told Storytellers, specializing in AFrican-American stories. Since 2013, she has portrayed Pauli Murray, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and Maya Angelo.
