Our second #HistoryHarvest is the very same day as the #Asheville #Holiday #Parade.🎉 The parade begins at 11 am and will be over just in time for our History Harvest to begin at 1! One of our favorite and recently donated collections is the John R. Hayes Collection (MS369). This group of photos features a number of Asheville Holiday Parade snapshots, especially of the #Hillcrest Highsteppin' Drum & Majorette Corps, a program founded by Mr. Hayes. Many of the photographs of #AfricanAmericans held in the #NCRoom do not show positive images of black folks living in our community in the past. Some, like the ones you can see here, are staged images posed by white photographers in order to intentionally depict a negative stereotype. These images were then marketed and sold to white audiences as postcards or "character and comic" images in gift shops and bookstores. One of our goals with our upcoming #HistoryHarvest is to collect more images from the 19th and early 20th centuries that depict African Americans in our community positively. Members of Asheville's #AfricanAmerican community have been central to the #tourism and #hospitality industry since before the Civil War. Enslaved people labored in inns and taverns along the Buncombe Turnpike, then during the boom of the 1920s worked as maids and porters. There were also many successful black-owned businesses in Asheville and Buncombe County throughout the late 19th and early 20th century, however, fewer records of this kind have been preserved in our community's public archive. This photo, titled "Suzie at the Chimes," depicts one of the ways black women labored behind the scenes in the early 20th century at the Manor and Cottages off Charlotte St. in North Asheville.
